Hello golfers,

I hope this finds you well and you all managed to stay safe during Storm Imogen the past few days. The club got a bit of a battering to say the least with the golf course, in particular, on the receiving end of a ridiculous amount of wind and rain. Last Saturday was like a scene from The Day After Tomorrow as we watched in amazement as the whole of the meadow disappeared under water as the river Teign burst its bank in three places to create severe flooding - as seen below. Kayaking would have not looked out of place as torrents ran across the bottom part of the golf course. Thankfully, when I drove in to work on Sunday morning I was greeted with green grass once again as the river level had dropped and the excess water had worked away. This, however, has left the course very wet with a lot of debris left to be cleared off the course. As I write this we are hopeful of getting the course back open at the end of the week.

Ladies news

Ladies brush up on the rules

I took the opportunity to spend a couple of hours with the ladies section on Tuesday, hosting a Rules Clinic with them in the warmth and dry of the clubhouse - pictured above. I had asked the ladies to email some suggestions of rules that they wanted me to cover and they came up with some testing ones for me to answer! I also opened up to allow a few further questions from the floor in what was a very worthwhile and informative exercise. We managed to cover quite a few different topics including water hazards, lost balls and plugged balls

As I explained to the ladies, the rules are there to be adhered to but if you know your way around the rules then you can use them to your advantage, obviously in a legal way! Knowing the rules is something that you choose to do and something that we would encourage you to do. As the weather improves I will be looking to hold some on-course rules walks open to all members. The idea will be to walk out on to the course and go through some rules scenarios which you face week-in week-out on your own course. Keep reading the newsletter in the coming weeks for more details.

Coach corner

We are here to help you enjoy your golf

One of the most rewarding parts of the jobs is to coach customers and help them to improve. The benefit of taking lessons is that not only will your golf improve, but more importantly your enjoyment will improve. This is such a key as it is vital that we enjoy playing this great game as surely this is why we took it up in the first place?

I had a lesson this week with a member who had always steered away from having lessons as he didn't think we would be able to help him. I had a good chat with him last weekend as he was playing the simulator. I watched him hit a couple of shots and just mentioned that I could see he had a lot of natural ability and with a bit of technical improvement he could really improve his golf.

It was brilliant when he later walked in to the shop to book a lesson. We have just had that lesson and it went really well and he really took to the couple of tweaks I suggested he made. There was a big smile on his face at the end of the session which is exactly why we do the job that we do. I then received a text that evening from him saying he was still buzzing from his lesson and was so glad I suggested that he book a lesson!

My team and I really can help everyone no matter what faults you think you may have or how unteachable you think you may be. Come in to the pro shop and talk to us about how we could help your golf game.

Assistants news

Here is a testimonial from member Ronnie Madell:

"Can I just say a big thank you for the help you have given me as a whole. When I played on Saturday I amazed myself hitting the ball a lot better off the tee which you know sets the rest of the hole up for me. It showed as I hit most of the greens in regulation. I felt much better standing on the tee aiming middle of fairway knowing if it leaks it's not a lot and always in play. Many thanks #needmorelessonswithyou"

Golfing tips - The correct lie

Ever needed an excuse to explain why your shot didn't go where you wanted? The below could be a huge reason and one that you can do little about without change. Lie angle is how the golf club sits on its sole at address, more importantly it'll be how the golf club interacts with the floor/turf through impact. Custom fitting focuses on what the correct lie would be for you due to swing, arm length, height, swing characteristics, ball flight and bad shots. Such a simple process to address so many aspects should not be ignored.

A quick rule of thumb
Too upright - the ball finishes left
Too flat - the ball finishes right

Don't let your game suffer! The nights are drawing out but please remember that I am here to coach from 8am - 8pm.

Coaching deals - February Special - 1 x 45 minute lesson + full gap testing = £35

Club news

Charity car parking space

This year the charity car parking space is back. Simon has very kindly agreed to donate a car parking space which can be won for a year in a prize draw. The Club Captains will be selling the draw tickets over the next few weeks at £5 a ticket so please support this great idea. Help raise some money for Banardos and maybe even grab yourself a prime car parking space for the next 12 months.

We are currently receiving demo product for some of this year's new ranges and it's been creating quite a hype around the club. From Nike's new photo blue Vapor Fly range to the new PING G range it's been great to get some of you hitting the product and receiving some great feedback. We will soon be choosing our product testers out of the fantastic response we have had and will be publishing their feedback in the newsletter. We will also be arranging demo days where all of you are welcome to come along and have a hit with this year's new products. Watch this space.

Thinking of getting a new pair of shoes for the season or a new golf bag maybe? Did you know that you may be missing out as you may have some money on your pro shop account to put towards it? It's amazing how little bits of competition winnings can add up. Next time you are at the Golf Club, why not come in and treat yourself to something nice using your account credit?
