Hello golfer,
I hope you are all well and have managed to play some golf this past week. The weather looks like it is on the turn so let's hope this is the start of a good golfing summer. Life at the club has been pretty busy with the club's teams in action as well as plenty of club competitions in flow. I am in the countdown to our last week here at the club and it's beginning to dawn on me that I am actually leaving. I am here until Saturday, 14 May so there will be one more newsletter sent out next week.
Farewell drinks
This Saturday between 4:30pm and 6:30pm, James, Chris and I are holding our leaving drinks in the clubhouse. It would be great to see as many of you there as possible for us to say our goodbyes. Although we are here for another week, it will be a very hectic last few days so we thought it would be better to do it the week before. We have already had some apologies from members who cannot make it but it would be great to see as many as you as possible.
3BBB Open - The club held its first Open of the year as a full field played in a 3BBB format, split down the middle between members and visitors. Normally you will expect 80% of prize winners to be members, however this was very much the other way as five of the six team winners were visitors. The winning team from Honiton posted their score late in the afternoon, their 84 points winning the event by five. Thank you to all who supported the event.
Midweek Stableford - A good field took to the course to compete in the Midweek Stableford and the scoring was very good. Peter Cox took full advantage of his new grips as he recorded 42 points to finish first. In 2nd and 3rd place were Lee Chatham and Steve Locke, both scoring 41 points.
The low wind shot
When playing on tough days or links golf courses, a low-flighted shot can be a real asset. Find ideas below on how to perform this correctly.
- Ball towards the middle of the stance and hands slightly forward
- At least one more club than normally used
- Feeling as though you are squeezing the ball with weight over the ball at impact
- A controlled and three-quarter swing
- A shortened follow through
These ideas are an attempt to lower the club's loft at impact, to create a compressed strike, to reduce the spin imparted on the ball and feel in control. I hope these are easy and a cornerstone of your game. If they aren't come in and we can have a conversation about why they are essential.
Coaching - The nights are drawing out so please remember that I am here to coach from 8am until 8pm. I am running an offer at present where you can get 6 x 45-minute sessions for £125.
Juniors - Saturday, 7 May between 9am and 12noon. See you all there.
