Hello golfers,

I hope this finds you well. Well what a day last Sunday was as the Palariet team narrowly lost out in the final to a strong Stover side. Life at the club has been very busy as plenty of golfers have made the most of the nice weather to take to the course. It's also been a good week of coaching for myself and the team with a lot of individual lessons as well as Get into Golf sessions and the Girls Rock Golf groups. I hope you enjoy the rest of the newsletter and have a good golfing week.

Pros news

New Feature - I am looking for some volunteers for a new feature to the newsletter. Meet the member is an opportunity for you to find out some things about a fellow member that you may not already know. Each week I would like to choose a different member and publish a photo alongside a bit of a question and answers feature. If you would like to be a willing volunteer then please contact me here.

News Items - If you have some golfing news that you may think would be good to feature in the newsletter, then please send it in. It could be a member who has played well in a competition away from the club, someone who has made a hole-in-one or someone achieving something outside of golf.

Members1 news

Promising junior member Jack Parry has seen his handicap reduced after playing in a non-CONGU junior event last week at East Devon Golf Club. Playing nine holes, Jack recorded a brilliant 24 points to win first prize. Congratulations Jack and I look forward to reporting on many more victories in the future.

Fresh off victories in the Devon Seniors and the South West Seniors, Rick Pillow has now been given the great honour of being named as Devon County Senior Captain. This is a fantastic honour for Rick and the club and I'm sure you'll join me in congratulating him.

Club teams

It was a case of last-hole heartache for the men's Palariet team last Sunday as they narrowly got piped to the trophy in the afternoon final, 3-2. The team, led by Ian Black and Darren Thorpe, saw off Yelverton in the morning's semi 3.5-1.5 to set up the Stover clash. It was always going to be a tough match and at one point we were down in all five matches and staring a heavy defeat in the face. However the team are made of strong stuff and just when we were looking for a turning point in the match, the pair of Dan Dobson and Stuart Jose played a six-hole stretch in 5-under-par to come from four down to two up. This seemed to start turning the tide as Ryan and Jack Pope also got their noses in front. In the end it came to the last match on the course which unfortunately Stover managed to sneak on the 18th green. Although naturally disappointed, the team should be very proud of their efforts as they have played and beat some good sides to reach the final and I'm sure they'll bounce back stronger for the experience next year.

The ladies Still Cup team, led by Chris Norton, have qualified for the semi-finals which are to be held at Woodbury Park next Friday, 26 August. They play Saunton and it would be great to see some of you there supporting the ladies in their quest for the trophy.

Coach corner

It is a fact that a lot of amateur golfers are put off having lessons due to the fear of having everything changed and having to learn a completely new technique. I can honestly state that this will never happen when having coaching with myself and or my team. I always find that although most people think they do everything wrong, this is simply not the case. Therefore one of the most important things I do is to explain to a golfer what they do well.

The key then is to identify what is causing the golfer's bad shot and start to work on that. I only work on something that will help the golfer play better. It's what will get the results better that counts, not how it looks. There is no method that we should all follow to hit any golf shot. How can there be when we are all so individual? It's all about you and how we can get you to play better. If I can get a golfer to understand how their own swing works and how they can rectify bad shots then we are winning straight away. I want golfers to embrace having lessons, not fear them.

So if you'd like a one-to-one lesson, get in touch here.

Swing studio

Studio update - More progress this week as the simulator booth structure has been pushing on and we are seeing it really take shape now. The screen and the projector have been ordered and I'm now in the process of deciding on the flooring. I'm currently working on a price list for hire of the simulator as well as prcing for gap testing and golf ball fittings. All will be revealed shortly.

Name the studio competition - Right golfers, time to think outside the box a little. I'm looking for a name for the new coaching and fitting studio. I want you to come up with an idea you think would work for its new name. Don't go too obvious! If I really like a suggestion then we will go with that name and the winner will get to officially open the new studio and win a FREE round of golf on the simulator. Get your thinking caps on and email me your suggestions here.

Product spotlight

The PING G irons feature revolutionary COR-Eye Technology providing four times the amount of flexing for consistently faster ball speeds across the hotter face. A simultaneous gain in ball speed and shot height generates more carry distance and a steeper landing angle so shots hit and hold the green.

  • Visual Appeal - At address, the iron's refined look is created by a thin top rail, satin blast finish and appropriate offset.
  • Perimeter Weighting - Weight saved from the face was allocated to the low toe and perimeter, creating a high MOI for extreme forgiveness
  • CTP Elevates Launch - Connecting the Custom Tuning Port to the sole creates a deeper CG that helps elevate the launch angle while increasing MOI for greater accuracy
  • Enhanced Sound and Feel - An enlarged multi-material damping badge joined to the cavity works with COR-Eye Technology to optimize sound and feel

To book a custom fitting for the PING G range, please get in touch here.

Competition news

A few weeks back I put a picture of Lyndon Bent in the newsletter from our superb Night Golf event and asked you to caption the picture. There were some great suggestions but the winner was Nick Rimmer for this caption:

"He once was known as golden balls but now he is known as glowing balls!"

Well done Nick, you can pick up your prize from the shop.

Other news

Earlier this week saw the third annual British Speedgolf Championship held in Kent. Speedgolf is a faster, more athletic version of golf. Competitors, using up to 7 clubs, are timed playing 18 holes and their score is added to the time taken to give a Speedgolf score.

In the expert Division, Ireland`s Rob Hogan from Galway put in a blistering performance, shooting a round of 82 in just 36 minutes 59 seconds, giving a winning score of 118.59. Rob is the World Speedgolf Champion and he successfully defended his British title. Runner-up was Chris Benians, a former European Tour member, who shot a 2-over-par 71 strokes in a time of 48 minutes and 17 seconds to give a score of 119.17. Former Exeter Junior Golf Captain, Russell Porter, shot 88 in 49 minutes to be comfortably in the top ten.

Speedgolf is open to lady golfers and novices. You can read more about this new sport at www.britishspeedgolf.co.uk.
