I hope this finds you all well golfed this week?

The weather remains very unsettled and making it very difficult to arrange any good playing time. Let's hope that over the next couple of weeks as we approach some major club fixtures the weather will become more favourable for us all.

It's still been a very busy week at the club with many of you taking to the course to play.

The course condition and set up keeps improving every week and this is no mean feat considering the weather conditions so congratulations to the greens staff on their efforts.

Rory hits a low and high in the same week

Life is never dull for Rory Mcilroy as he this week has experienced a major low point in his life followed by a major high. His high profile split with Fiance Caroline Wozanaki put him under huge media pressure as he teed it up at Wentworth last week in the BMW PGA Chmapionship and no one really felt he would contend with all the hype thrust on him.

However he seemed to thrive on the sanctuary of the golf course where he didn't have to Anser any pressing questions for 4 and a half hours per day.

Although it needed a slip from Dane Thomas Bjorn Mcilroy posted a brilliant last round of 66 to win the title by a shot.

After playing some consistent golf this year and always being in the top 10 it was great to see him out a win against his name and get his season kick started. Hopefully now the shackles are off we will all see Rory find his best form and have a really successful season including a starring role in the Ryder Cup in September.

The Anniversary Cup was played for at the weekend with all sections competing for their respective sectional trophys.

The weather conditions were a little testing but that did not stop the scoring being superb as the four sectional winners were a combined 18 under handicap!!! The winners were :

Ladies - Fiona Carpenter - nett 65 
Teignagers - Ian Couper - nett 65 
Juniors - Kieran Hewings - nett 68 
Men - Shaun Douglas - nett 64 
Scratch winner - Olly Holman - gross 73

Ladies Express and Echo Foursomes Kim Paley and Serena Skinner won the ladies Express and Echo Foursomes qualifier and now go forward to represent the club at the Regional Final.

Working with pupils on a multitude of faults just got easier here at the Valley. I have just had delivery of a Swingperfector.

This is a great new teaching aid which allows me to work with pupils on correcting various swing faults. It's key use is based around swing plane and helping the pupil to swing in the desired plane in order to get them striking the ball more consistently and with increased direction.

It also has many other uses though and can help with weight transfer, loss of height in the swing and posture issues to name but a few.

Know how far you hit the ball

Many golfers I play with have no idea of what yardage they have left in to any green. Their club selection is based upon guess work which they may get away with it to an extent as they become familiar with their own course but when they go elsewhere they struggle to get their club selection right. A GPS watch is the perfect way to get a accurate yardage on every shot you play. It displays a yardage to the front, middle and back of any green thus giving you the opportunity to select the correct club needed to cover the required distance. The Skycaddie GPS watch is a fantastic product and is in stock in the pro shop. We have a demo watch available for you to take to the course and try.

Find your numbers 

Working in conjunction with a GPS device it is vital that you know how far you hit each club. Using our GC2 launch monitor we can help you to understand how far you hit each club. We can help you perform a gap test which works out the average carry and total distance you hit each of your clubs vital information for the golf course.

An example of this would be your GPS device showing 132 yards to go and you knowing your 8 iron goes 135 would be a pretty good club selection.

As the new golfing season approaches many of you will be thinking about treating yourselves to some new irons. Please remember that as your PGA Club Professional I am the most qualified person to help you find the correct set of irons for you. With the aid of our GC2 launch monitor I can give you the ultimate custom fit experience to make sure that we are fitting you correctly for your new clubs. We will look at elements such as shaft length and flex, grip size, lie angle and lofts to try to get the most out of your game.

Annual Pro-am

• We are moving towards our annual Pro-am which is on Tuesday 17th June.
• As usual this proceeds the West Region PGA Fourball event in which myself and Ben came runner up in last year. The Pro-am is always a fantastic day for the amateurs as you get to play with a West Region Professional in a team event format.
• We have nearest the pins as well as a fantastic prize table and each competitor receives a bacon bap and coffee as well as a 2 course meal after play.

We hope that many of you will support the day and we would love you to start entering your teams of 3 players to which we can then allocate you a Professional.
