Competition news

Turkey Trot

Last Sunday I held my first Turkey Trot at the club and it was a massive success. Over 100 players teed off in a shotgun start team event. Despite temporary greens and no trolleys, all golfers took to the course to have some fun and to get in the Christmas spirit.

The prize giving was superbly attended and created a great atmosphere in the clubhouse.

The scoring was very good and the prizes were keenly contested. In the mixed section it was Stuart Jose, Kathryn Jose, Martin Cocks and Tim Lee who took top spot with 108pts. The men's section was won by Ray Banfield, Ben Lynch, Colin Wayman and Jimmy Heal who signed for 107pts.

Lady Captain Janet Milford presented the prizes. Mens Captain Keith Parnall presented cheques on behalf of last year's captains and the total handed over exceeded £6000.

Ladies American Foursomes

Linda Bligh and Sandra Royston took top honours with 43pts. Runner ups were Mary Ellis and Jenny Paddon on countback. Sylvia Fenton and Paula Retter pipped Ali Crooks and Jill Searle into 3rd place.

Mens Fourball Betterball Stableford

A fantastic 51pts from Paul Smale and Michael Brown King won the mens betterball stableford on Saturday. Runners up on countback were Steve Rice and Neil Winter with 48pts.

Pros news

As Much As I Love My Own Course...

There is no doubt that I love our course here at Exeter Golf and Country Club, but travelling 250 miles over 6 hours to play 10 holes on temporary greens is maybe going a little far! This is exactly what happened last Thursday. We were due to play at Saunton in the Devon Alliance, so we set off from the club at 6.30am and headed up north. Over half way there we were notified that due to a severe frost the event was cancelled but we could still play on temporary greens. We kept going and on arrival had breakfast and pondered our next move. The next move was back down the link road and up the M5 to Weston Super Mare who were on 18 main greens. What we didn't know was that by the time we got there it was covered in freezing fog and the course was closed! An hour and 20 minutes later and we were giving up on playing there and heading back to Exeter to play 10 holes on temporary greens! Yes back where I started my day at 6.30am! I have to say though that it was a day full of laughs and I really enjoyed the 10 holes we played on a beautiful afternoon. Every cloud and all that!

Tiger Is Back!

So last week saw the long awaited comeback of the legend that is Tiger Woods. It was going to be interesting to see how he stood up in tournament conditions after so long off and I have to say he showed some glimpses of the old magic. His second round 65 in particular was superb! He ultimately limped home a little in his final round but none the less had shown that his game is in there somewhere and 2017 may just be the year we at last see him take on some of the young guns. I am dreaming of him going head to head with Rory and co in April at Augusta! Now that would be what dreams are made of. Like him or loath him the game of golf is so much better with Tiger around. Let's hope he's around for a long time to come.

The tickets will be numbered 1 - 500 and the amount you pay for your ticket is based upon the number of the ticket you draw out of the hat at random. The wait is over, Tiger Woods is back. This perfect bunker shot was one of many highlights from his four days in the Bahamas - although there was plenty of rust, too.
