Hello golfers,

I wanted to start this week by saying a huge thank you to all the members who have welcomed and supported myself and the professional team in our first year at the club. We have loved every minute of our time here and feel we have achieved a lot in that time but also feel that there is a lot more to come.

Competition news

Mercedes Trophy

A superb nett 61 from Christian Olesen won the Mercedes Trophy and he now goes forward to the regional final. Runner up was Barry Lambert with a nett 65 and 3rd was Chris Haggar with nett 66.

Congratulations Debbie

Debbie Bent had reason to celebrate last week as her tee shot on the 12th hole flew straight into the hole for a hole in one. Well done Debbie!

Director's Cup

Last weekend we saw the Director's Cup take place at the club. A full field took up the challenge of playing a 36 hole medal. Home hopes were high for a challenge for honours in both the scratch and nett sections. Scoring was always destined to be fairly tight with a high quality field including county players from Devon and Cornwall and handicaps as low as plus 3.

In the end it was Jack Pope who won the Director's Cup with an excellent total of -6 nett after gross scores of 70 and 66. Runner-up was last year's winner and up and coming junior Lewis Beer who finished 1 shot back on -5. Although Jack had the best gross he could only win one prize, so the best gross was won by Matt Richardson from Cornwall. Harry Greenberry was runner-up and George Robinson was 3rd. Prizes were presented by Director Peter Lacey.

Commando Charity Golf Day

Charity Golf Day
140 players supported the recent Commando Charity Golf Day held by our Club President Keith Bolden.

Playing in a 4 player team format with 2 scores to count, it was set to be a fun day with the aim to raise as much money for charity as possible.

To help swell the coffers for the charity we ran a beat the pro challenge on the 4th hole. Tom went up to represent the pro shop and did well as only 6 players beat him!

The team event was won by the home team of David Rajakovich, Ricardo Moran, Martin Woodward and Mike Chorley who recorded a fine 91pts. Runners-up were Geoff Bush, Mike Comber, Chris Wright and Adrian Hewitt who scored 90pts. Keith was extremely grateful for the hard work put in by all concerned and by the generosity of sponsors to help raise an amount to be disclosed very soon.

Ladies Medal 3

Gill Whitehead won Division 1 with a nett 74 on countback. This was a popular score with Jane Smale, Helen Pascoe and Viv Worthington also signing for the same score. Division 2 was won by Corrina Knowles with a nett 72. Runner Up was Georgia Finch with nett 73 and Linda Bligh was 3rd with a nett 74. A brilliant nett 68 from Sarah Branton won Division 3. Sharon Thorpe was runner-up with 71 and Sylvia Fenton was 3rd with 72.

Optional Sunday Stableford

Star performer was Paul Naden with 43pts. Darren Eshun was runner up with 38pts and Harvey Jones was 3rd with 35pts.

Pros advice

Why Ignore The Most Important Club?

It's very interesting when I look in most amateur's golf bags and see what clubs they carry. Nothing interests me more than looking at the putter. Often I see a good set of irons and woods and yet the putter is something that clearly has had no thought put in to it. Golfers quite rightly spend good money on getting fitted with the correct driver for their game that they may use 13 times maximum around our course.

Yet when it comes to the putter they seem happy to pick up something cheap and cheerful yet they use it somewhere between 34 - 40 times a round on average. This is surely where more attention needs to be placed in order to save shots and improve their handicap. Of course technique plays a major part but equally so does having a putter that is fitted correctly with its length and head style to suit your stroke. Also let me ask you this. Are you someone who strokes your putts or hits your putts? Many of you won't know. Even if you do, are you using a putter with the correct face insert to best suit this style?

Lots of questions to answer. Let us help you save shots and stop thinking putting as just one of those things that you have to do but is not important. Click here to book your putting lesson and come in store so we can recommend the best putter for you.
