Hello golfers,

I hope you all have had a good golfing week. Life at the club has once again been very busy with lots of activity on the golf course as well as a busy diary of coaching and custom fitting for your professional team. I hope the weather stays fair and you can all enjoy some more golf this week.

Competition news

Jim Wins a Major

Saturday saw the annual Captain's Trophy take place, hosted by men's captain Keith Parnall and his wife Debbie. A full field were greeted with a half way house on the 8th tee, including a drink and a pasty courtesy of Keith. The conditions were tricky and it was going to be interesting to see what the scoring would be like. In the end it was Jim Norton (pictured) who led the way with a brilliant nett 66, pipping Alan Cleave to the trophy on countback.

Captain's Dinner

Saturday night myself and the Pro Shop team had the pleasure of attending the Captain's Dinner. We all had a great time enjoying a fantastic meal and enjoying some lovely company. It was nice to mix with some members outside the Pro Shop and share some laughs and stories.

Sunday Optional Stableford

George Bunringham kept up his fine run of form with another 43pts and now finds himself off a 6 handicap. Martin Cocks was runner up with 37pts pipping Jack Moxey and Sam Holmes on countback.

Juniors Excel for County

We are very proud of our juniors and we have good representation in the Devon county squads. Last week saw the quartet of Max Parsons, Lewis Beer, Fred Bishop and James Reed.

Thursday 1st June saw the Devon U14/16 Team travel to the very impressive Kendleshire golf club in Gloucestershire to take on the rest of the southwest in the SWGCA U14/16 championship. Great course, and great weather greeted the team for their practice round on the Thursday where some good preparation was carried out.

Competition day on Friday saw the boys go out very much as a unit, as the best 7 scores from each team of 9 counted for the team score. At the turn, lead out man James Reed came through at a steady 1 over, followed by Craig Passmore on level...so far so good. Luke Tooley was our next man through on 3 over, but our position was really strengthened with Lewis Beer then coming through 1 under, but they all still had the tougher back 9 to come. These half time scores were all backed up with solid front 9s from Haydon McCance, Max Parsons, Fred Bishop & Jack Dart - the boys were going well.

James came home with a creditable 4 over, solid for the team, but Craig Passmore quickly followed him in having gained a shot on the back 9, with a great best gross of the day of 1 under, well done Craig. Lewis Beer (pictured, left) really gave the team a boost, backing up his great start by finishing just 1 over, 2nd overall, and Matt Millar recovered really well from a poor start to bring home a counting score, along with Haydon McCance & Luke Tooley. Max Parsons picked up the best nett trophy (pictured, right)), but just as importantly another great score for the team, Fred Bishop also put in a very strong performance. With Devon's 7 scores to count all in the top 22, the boys proved too strong as a unit, winning by 11 shots over Wiltshire in 2nd (3rd Cornwall, 4th Gloucestershire, 5th Dorset, 6th Somerset).

Captain pro challenge

James & Andy rise to the challenge

The 2017 Captain and Pro challenge started this week as myself and Keith took on the pairing of James Mullins and Andy Sheppard. In brutal conditions with 40mph gusts, the front 9 was a scrappy affair with myself and Keith heading to the 10th tee 1up. However this was where the scoring then went hot as there were 8 birdies in the next 9 holes! The lead ebbed and flowed through the back 9 with birdies exchanged on 11, 12 and 14 with Andy's nett birdie on 15 seeing them going to the 16th tee 1up. James then hit an amazing shot to the back left flag to no more than 3 feet but I ran in my 20 footer to halve in birdie 2's. 17 saw me drive the green to 12 feet and Keith hit his approach to 6 feet, only for Andy to hit to 2 feet and match my birdie for another half. A seesaw 18th hole saw Andy 2 putt from 40 feet for a half and to win the match 1up. The match was played in great spirit and was of incredibly high standard through the last 10 holes.

We look forward to the other matches we have arranged over the next few weeks.

Course news

Please Look After Our Short Game Area

Despite numerous requests we are still seeing a vast amount of damage around the short game area. Please can you remember to only hit a couple of shots from any one location before moving to a new position to reduce the wear and tear in any one area. Also please remember to replace any divots you may take and to use the divot mix. Also please refrain from hitting balls from the fringe of the green and taking divots. A new CCTV camera has been installed to help identify any culprits. Please be proud of our amazing facilities and do your part to keep them in great condition.
