Excited yet?

With Roger Federer’s eighth Wimbledon triumph and Lewis Hamilton’s record-equalling fifth British Grand Prix win, last weekend was very much one of inevitability and predictability. This weekend, however, promises to be anything but as Royal Birkdale plays host to The Open Championship.

The usual players will be among the favourites to lift the Claret Jug come Sunday evening, but with none of them seemingly hitting top form at present, this could well be one of the most open Majors that we’ve witnessed in years.

Foremost TV spent some time with three-time winner Gary Player recently, finding out his thoughts on Birkdale and who he thinks will be the next Open champion.

The PING G400 is here

The PING G400 Irons have been developed with new materials and finishes compared to all their previous irons, which means that they not only fly further but higher too.

Fact: Truly outstanding game-improvement irons don’t come along very often. If you can name more than five, without checking Google, you’re either easily pleased or know something we don’t.

The problems stem from how game improvement irons in the past have been viewed by designers as the poor cousins of better player alternatives. Golf club engineers thought – wrongly – that “average” golfers wanted forgiveness at all costs, and simply forgot to factor-in decent looking head shapes that golfers would accept as being playable.

PING were guilty of it themselves with the original PING Zings, but, thanks to modern tech, things are changing.

As manufacturers have tried to out-do each other on distance, lofts have got stronger; but ball flights got flatter, making it harder to stop shots on a green. So a key design parameter for the G400 was longer, but only if it was higher, too. PING are confident that the PING G400 irons deliver both.

Let’s Keep It Simple

Most of the best golf lessons are always based around the word simple. Keeping it simple for the pupil to understand and also keeping it simple to allow the pupil a good opportunity to make any required change. The golf swing is not about looks and perfection, it is about being functional and being repetitive. Obviously sometimes in making a productive change to a technique you will improve its visual image. This however is a by-product of the change being made.

It is important to understand how your golf swing functions and what little keys make you play your best golf. By understanding your swing you can learn to get around the course in lower scores even when you don’t quite have your A game.

It's not just about hitting the green…

If you really want to lower your scores this year it's important that you don’t just settle for hitting the green, but instead focus on hitting the right part to avoid three-putt territory. This will be a key consideration for the pros at Royal Birkdale this week, just take the 17th green for example:

While aiming for the middle of the green is usually a safe bet, if the flag is on a tier an approach to the wrong level (red zone above) will often lead to a three putt.

TRUST YOUR CLUBS

Having faith in your clubs and knowing their yardages allows you to be confident and aggressive when you need to go at a flag that is hidden by a hazard or tier (green zone above).

Playing a new course isn't easy

A lot of golfers get excited about going to play at new courses - whether that's in club matches, invitation days or just a game with friends - but usually they go ill-prepared and find themselves struggling when it comes to judging new holes and hidden hazards.
