Did Wanye know something we didn't Wayne Riley’s timing in his commentary at last week’s Open on Sunday when Jordan Spieth was lining up a 50 foot eagle putt was scarily on point. He whispered down his microphone:
“Special players are capable of special moments at special times and this guy is special”. We all then watched as his 50 foot putt found the middle of the hole for an eagle and a big step towards another Major title for the talented American. What looked like on paper being a pretty dull last round shoot out with Spieth predicted to win easily actually turned out to be very entertaining mainly down to Spieth losing the ability to find a fairway with his driver and having to take drops onto the driving range which all made for an interesting back 9. The biggest disappointment was the lack of any challenge from any European or British golfer. Rory Mcllroy was left to rue his horrible start to his 1st round as his 5 over through 6 left him a mountain to climb. He finished a creditable 4th but will be relishing the US PGA Championship, the last Major of the year which is held at Quail Hollow a course he loves. Back to The Open and wow what a great course Birkdale is. It is a really fair and true test of golf rewarding the good and punishing the bad. Is there a better venue out there?
