Greetings from Darren Everett
Teign Valley Golf Club - PGA Golf Professional

Hello golfers,

Another week has passed and the weather in the main has been good. Plenty of course action has been seen by many of you this week which is great to see. As most of you will be aware my new coaching assistant James has started and is already helping some of you to improve your games. If you have not met him yet then pop in to the Pro Shop and say hello as he is working a few shop shifts for a while to get to know you.

We have a slightly quiter weekend ahead this week before another busy period ahead.

CakeTeignagers Charity Day

The Teignagers held their annual charity day in aid of Dream A Way the golf clubs chosen charity. A fantastic field of over 120 played on a lovely day of weather. Alongside the main competition there was a raffle and a auction all helping to raise funds for the charity.

The whole day was a huge success and was superbly organised by Tony Landau and his section who were ably assisted by a core of the ladies section.

The total raised on the day was a staggering £2700! A brilliant effort by all.

New mixed organisers needed

We are looking to recruit a couple to take over the running of the mixed section. Barbera and Len Thomas have done a fantastic job the past 2 years but have decided that it is time to stand down and pass the role on to someone new. It is not a daunting task to run the mixed and as many of you know the mixed is a very social section to be involved with.

If you think you may like to help within the mixed section then please contact myself or Len and Barbera.

Pop in and get dressed for success this summer.

Next Saturday sees the 3rd staging of my Pros day. This year we have a record entry as 160 players will be teeing off to compete in a better ball Stableford format which boasts the best prize table of the year! Thank you to everyone who has signed up to play I have ordered some good weather and also some good scoring but I can't tell you who for!!

Good luck to all those playing and thank you again for your support.

Saturday saw the staging of our Nike Experience Day. We had the benefit of two of a Nike Golfs tour technicians spending the day with us giving the players valuable insight in to how the product works and what may suit a players game from drivers to balls.

Both James and Guy from Nike did a great job and I thank them both for their efforts. We ran the day in conjunction with the men's medal but also had some of the ladies section play at the end in a Stableford. Nike were mind enough to donate some prizes for overall winners, nearest the pin winners and the longest drive winner.

On a day of good weather it was expected there would be good scoring, however the scoring turned out to be exceptional!

Setting the clubhouse lead was fairly new member John Simon who recorded a brilliant nett 63! You would of thought this would be enough for victory but Vinny Chalk had other ideas as he blitzed round in a superb nett 62 which included a treble bogey on the last! The leading lady was Jane Hodgson beating Annette Haigh in count back.

The Nike nearest the pin challenge was won by Dennis Lock and the Nike long drive challenge was won by Malcolm Douglas.

Rory's WardrobeA big thank you to all those who played and supported the day and took advantage of the free fittings available to all.

And when it comes to what Rory will be wearing over The Open weekend, take a look at the image here which highlights the clothing for each day. Fingers crossed we get to see all 4 days of his attire. We should do after his blistering 7 under par round yesterday at the Scottish Open in Aberdeen.

It's Turbulator Time

Arriving shortly in to the pro shop will be the New range of PING G30 clubs. The range includes the new driver which is armed with the new "Turbulator" design which helps reduce air drag so therefore increases club head speed and in turn distance. The product launches in a few weeks but we have the demo irons in stock now for anyone wanting an early custom fitting.

Great clothing ranges in store

Looking at the weather we could be looking at donning our summer wardrobe over the next week. This is the perfect time to treat yourself to a new golfing shirt for summer. We have some great shirts in stock in a wide range of colours, styles and sizes so we have something for everybody.

Pop in and get dressed for success this summer.

Superstroke your way to better scores

As many of you will have seen recently there has been a growing number of players switching to use a Superstroke putter grip. The larger grips are designed to encourage a more solid putting stroke helping to eliminate excessive wrist action which is often one of the major causes of inconsistent putting. If the wrists become to active then this can have major restrictions on the ability to control distance putts and maintain a square club face through impact causing pushes and pulls. The Superstroke range of putter grips come in various sizes to suit all golfers so next time your at the club why not pop in to the shop and we can advise you on what size grip to be fitted with.

Do you struggle with judging the distance of your approach shots?

Many golfers I play with have no idea of what yardage they have left in to any green. Their club selection is based upon guess work which they may get away with it to an extent as they become familiar with their own course but when they go elsewhere they struggle to get their club selection right.

A GPS watch is the perfect way to get a accurate yardage on every shot you play. It displays a yardage to the front, middle and back of any green thus giving you the opportunity to select the correct club needed to cover the required distance. The Skycaddie GPS watch is a fantastic product and is in stock in the pro shop.

We have a demo watch available for you to take to the course and try.

How far do you hit each club?

Working in conjunction with a GPS device it is vital that you know how far you hit each club. Using our GC2 launch monitor we can help you to understand how far you hit each club. We can help you perform a gap test which works out the average carry and total distance you hit each of your clubs vital information for the golf course.

An example of this would be your GPS device showing 132 yards to go and you knowing your 8 iron goes 135 would be a pretty good club selection.

David Howell has how far he can hit a full out 7 iron (165 yards) and a soft 7 (150 yards) written on the back of each iron. It sounds simple but it takes the guess work out of your iron play, leaving you one less thing to worry about on the course!

To book your fitting please click here, or come in the pro shop and sepak to one of the team.

This year we are giving you lots of exciting initiatives to be part of. These include the following :

  • 10 yard challenge
  • Shoe trade in
  • Bag trade in
  • Glove trade in
  • Short game assessments
