Greetings from Darren Everett
Teign Valley Golf Club - PGA Golf Professional

Hello golfers,

I hope this finds you well and you have been well golfed this week. My week has been based around the Open as I have been captivated by Rory Mcilroys charge to his 3rd major title. Majors always inspire people to play, with the extensive BBC coverage. Hopefully we will see you all inspired also and get you out there playing plenty of golf the rest of the summer. I had to sneak some Open watching around my Pro's Day this weekend, but still managed it get my fix.

The Open Review

Well what an Open that was! It was brilliant to see Rory lead from the start and ultimately lift the Claret Jug. His golf was superb all week and he looked in total control over every part of his game.

Even on Sunday when both Sergio Garcia and Ricky Fowler were making a charge he stood up and kept to his game plan and never got flustered, even after his own bad start to the final round. The course at Hoylake was in superb condition and played very fairly, and it was open to good scoring which the players took advantage of. So Rory has now completed leg 3 of the career grand slam and will be looking forward now to The US Masters next April to see if he can achieve the final leg.

Saturday saw the staging of my annual Pro's Day. 162 people teed up to play in a better ball pairs format. On a day where the weather was luckily nothing like they forecast, we were treated to the course in great condition and set up for some low scoring. Players had plenty of opportunites to win a prize as there were nearest the pin prizes on every hole of some kind, either in 1,2 or 3 shots aimed at every section and handicap category.

There were also longest drive prizes and the main prizes went down to 10th place. The winning score was recorded by the pair of Matt Lee and Malcolm Douglas who signed for an amazing 51pts! Runners up with 49pts were the pair of Adrian Izod and Brian Barron beating the pair of Tom Duncan and Mark Gibbs in to 3rd place.

We had a 5 man playoff for the putting competition with the final taking place in the sunshine and with a decent crowd watching there was a great atmosphere prior to the main presentation. In the end it was Geoff Garrett who sank the winning putt to cheers from the gallery.

I would like to take this opportunity to say a massive thank you to all those who took part and supported the day and in particular the large crowd who attended presentation.

I have attached a list of all winners.

Congratulations to my New Teaching Professional James Maxwell for winning the PGA Southwest Pro-am tournament at Farrington Golf Club on Sunday.

James shot a 4 under 68 to win by a shot, and also saw his team home to victory in the team event. Well done James a good start to your Teign Valley career.

If you would like James to help you with your game then take advantage of his current offer of £5 off your first lesson with James.

The Summer Dance

The Teign Valley Golf Club Summer Dance takes place on Saturday 9th August at 7.30pm. Open to members and non members and with all welcome, there will be live music and food and it promises to be a great night. It's great to have these social events at the club so please support this event.

To sign up and buy your tickets please ask Nicola or Leah.

New mixed organisers needed

We are looking to recruit a couple to take over the running of the mixed section. Barbera and Len Thomas have done a fantastic job the past 2 years, but have decided that it is time to stand down and pass the role on to someone new. It is not a daunting task to run the mixed and as many of you know the mixed is a very social section to be involved with.

If you think you may like to help within the mixed section then please contact myself or Len and Barbera.

We are holding our Summer Sale over the weekend of the 9th and 10th of August
There will be great deals on clothing, shoes, bags and much more. The sale will start at 7am on the 9th and end at 6pm on the 10th

Don't miss out on some great deals!

Myself and my Professional team are on a mission to help you understand the importance of putting. It is becoming ever more obvious that players are blaming their bad putting down to "one of those days", where in reality it lies far deeper than that. Let's look at the possible variables in putting and see how many we as players can control.

Variable outcomes we CAN control
- Technique, Aim, Strike, Speed, Line, Using the correct putter, Using the correct ball

Variable outcomes we CAN'T control
- Surface, Wind

As we can see the list of variables we can control is far greater than the list we can't. Our objective is to help you control those variables much more effectively. We are holding a putting experience day on Saturday 2nd August with the aim to help you become a better putter.

We will have our range of stock putters out on the putting green allowing you access to try the latest models and let us analysis your technique and recommend a putter to suit your stroke. We will also being giving you technique tips to become a better putter and will arm you with some putting drills to use in your practice time. We will also be running a putting competition on the day with a prize for the winner.

To allow a decent number of you the opportunity to take advantage of this great day we are running 2 sessions which will be as follows: 1 - 2pm and 3 - 4pm. To book yourself in to a time slot then please contact us at the Pro Shop by clicking here

Rory's Outfits in Store Now!

As many of you will have seen over the weekend Rory Mcilroy was dressed in the Nike range of Innovation polos and trousers.

We have this range in stock in the Pro Shop so next time your at the club why not pop in and have a look at what the Open champion wears!

Did you win on my Open tips?

If you the read the newsletter last week you would have seen that I gave you my top 3 tips for the Open. Well as it turned out I wasn't far out with those.

Ricky Fowler came runner up and Shane Lowery and Gramae McDowell came tied 8th so not bad shouts as it worked out.

I myself had both Rory Mcilroy and Ricky Fowler so earns some extra pocket money over the weekend.

It's Turbulator Time

Arriving shortly in to the pro shop will be the new range of PING G30 clubs. The range includes the new driver which is armed with the new "Turbulator" design which helps reduce air drag so therefore increases club head speed and in turn distance.

The range includes a draw bias driver to help any golfer who hits the ball left to right and a range of fairway woods and rescues. The product launches in a few weeks but we have the demo irons in stock now for anyone wanting an early custom fitting. Contact us at the Pro Shop for more details.

James lesson offer

For the month of July, James is offering £5 off your first lesson with him. James has already started working with many if you so why not take advantage of this special offer to see what James can do to help your game. To book your lesson please contact the Pro Shop by clicking here

Super stroke your way to better scores

As many of you will have seen recently, there has been a growing number of players switching to use a Superstroke putter grip.

The larger grips are designed to encourage a more solid putting stroke helping to eliminate excessive wrist action, which is often one of the major causes of inconsistent putting.

If the wrists become to active then this can have major restrictions on the ability to control distance putts and maintain a square club face through impact causing pushes and pulls.

The Superstroke range of putter grips come in various sizes to suit all golfers, so next time your at the club why not pop in to the shop and we can advise you on what size grip to be fitted with.

New Shoes in store now

We have had delivery in store of some new styles and colours in the superb Nike range of golf shoes. The Nike Lunar Control, Mont Royal and FI Impact have produced some new mid-season colours that make the shoes look even more striking! Come in to see us next time your at the club and try some on!

Great clothing ranges in store

Looking at the weather we could be looking at donning our summer wardrobe over the next week. This is the perfect time to treat yourself to a new golfing shirt for summer. We have some great shirts in stock in a wide range of colours, styles and sizes so we have something for everybody. Pop in and get dressed for success this summer.

Know how far you hit the ball

Many golfers I play with have no idea of what yardage they have left in to any green. Their club selection is based upon guesswork that they may get away with it to an extent as they become familiar with their own course, but when they go elsewhere they struggle to get their club selection right.

A GPS watch is the perfect way to get a accurate yardage on every shot you play. It displays a yardage to the front, middle and back of any green, thus giving you the opportunity to select the correct club needed to cover the required distance. The Skycaddie GPS watch is a fantastic product and is in stock in the pro shop. We have a demo watch available for you to take to the course and try.

Find your numbers

Working in conjunction with a GPS device, it is vital that you know how far you hit each club. Using our GC2 launch monitor we can help you to understand how far you hit each club. We can help you perform a gap test which works out the average carry and total distance you hit each of your clubs vital information for the golf course. An example of this would be your GPS device showing 132 yards to go and you knowing your 8 iron goes 135 would be a pretty good club selection. To book your fitting please contact the pro shop by clicking here
