Balance over power! I have had a lot of members coming into the pro shop the past few days and making comment to Dustin Johnson’s performance in Hawaii last weekend. The score he posted and the winning margin was very impressive but being able to drive the ball onto the green on 430 yard par 4 holes was mind blowing! Yes it was downhill and the ball is running 60 yards but none the less a tap in 2 and other easy 2 putt birdies through the tournament certainly made life a little easier for him. So how does he do it? Well there are lots of factors such as his height, his long levers, his flexibility, his strength etc, which for sure these help him to create some seriously impressive power. However, power without its side kick is not going to be efficient. The side kick fore mentioned is balance! Creating power without maintaining balance will not maximise strike which is all key at any level if you are to hit drives straight and over a distance. Finding the centre of the clubface is so important at any level of golf as often the shots we hit off line are due to mis-centred strikes. To maximise your distance stop trying to hit the ball out of sight but work more on maintaining balance and creating that consistent strike.
