Greetings from Darren Everett
Teign Valley Golf Club - PGA Golf Professional

Hello golfers,

And so it has been confirmed. It will be Poulter, Gallagher and Westwood as the 3 wild cards to make up the European team for this years Ryder Cup in a few weeks at Gleneagles. I don't think there will many people questioning these picks although it was probably a close call between Westwood and the man to miss out Luke Donald.

I have to say that looking at the American team, complete with their wild card picks it is a very very strong team they are bringing over and I really think this could be the closet contest for many a year; but still have the Europeans to just edge it.

I will be there for the duration and am very much looking forward to my trip to Scotland.

Let James help your game

James recently came 3rd in the Welsh Festival, an event that is part of the West Region circuit. A strong part of James golf game is to get the most out of every round he plays by choosing the right shot at the right time and thinking his way around the golf course.

If you are looking for a bit of help to take your golf game to the next level then James is the man to help.

Bladed wedge -Giving you a different option around the green

When around the green, a ball nestled up against a collar of rough can provide a real headache. A top tip is to leave the putter in the bag and instead use your most lofted wedge.

The idea here as the title suggests is to use the bottom of the wedge as a makeshift putter. This provides a very consistent roll, without getting caught up in the rough. You play this with the same set up as the putter - same grip, same stance, same length of swing.

For any demonstration of this please pop in and have a chat

Grip for success

As we approach the winter months, it is essential that you review the condition of your grips. Many of you will not have changed your grips since you have had your clubs so they will be well over due a change. It is a proven fact that poor grip condition can lead to poor golf. One of the key reason is that over a period of time grips lose their traction, they become hard and shiny and can start to slip in the hands when hitting shots.

As a reaction to this, it is common for a golfer to then increase grip pressure in order to keep hold of the club, which in turn can cause tension leading to poor rhythm and poor timing. We have recently installed a new grip bar in the Pro Shop that allows us to correctly fit you for the best type and size of grip to suit your game.

Correct grip size is crucial for consistent golf as it allows the hands to control the club head. If the grips are to thin then the hands can work to quickly causing the club head to close and the shots to fly left. If the grips are to thick then the hands can work to slowly leaving the club face open leading to the ball flying to the right.

Next time your at the club why not pop in and talk to us about having some new grips fitted and see what difference it can make to your game.

Super stroke your way to better scores

As many of you will have seen recently there has been a growing number of players switching to use a Superstroke putter grip. The larger grips are designed to encourage a more solid putting stroke helping to eliminate excessive wrist action which is often one of the major causes of inconsistent putting.

If the wrists become too active then this can have major restrictions on the ability to control distance putts and maintain a square club face through impact causing pushes and pulls. The Superstroke range of putter grips come in various sizes to suit all golfers, so next time you're at the club, why not pop in to the shop and we can advise you on what size grip to be fitted with.

Our Price Promise to All Our Customers

I take great pride in not only the amount of great product that we stock, but also how competitive our pricing is. I make it one of my weekly tasks to sit down and look at other retailers and compile a list of what price they are selling the products that we stock.

Without having to move my pricing, I am always sitting there right alongside the best pricing online. The one thing I can give all my customers that the online retailers cannot is face to face advice and service. We are here 7 days a week to help you with all of your enquiries and queries and are the best people qualified to recommend and fit you for correct produce. We also offer a complete after sales service package on all items we sell which gives our customers complete piece of mind.

If by any chance anyone finds a product we sell and the price is cheaper than us, then I am more than happy to match that price without compromising on our quality of service. Please feel free to come in to the Pro Shop and chat to us about our services.

Men's Invitation Day

The annual Men's Invitation Day was held at the weekend with a good field taking to the course. Playing a better ball Stableford format off three quarters handicap, the scoring was excellent. The winners on count back were Steve Locke and Jim Mills who recorded 44pts beating Joel Carnell and Simon Higgins.

Congratulations to all prize winners and a big thank you to Ted for all his organisation.

Teignagers Medal

The scoring in the Teignagers medal on Monday was superb. Gordon Thomson recorded the lowest score of the day with his brilliant nett 62 enough to win Division 1. Runner up was Chris Davies with a nett 66.

Division 2 was won by Brian Tozer with a fantastic nett 63 beating Barry Gribble in to 2nd place on nett 66.
