Greetings from Darren Everett
Teign Valley Golf Club - PGA Golf Professional

Hello golfers,

I hope this finds you all well. Well we had a very busy weekend at the club with lots of you taking to the course to play. It's been brilliant to see how many of you have kept playing regularly this winter. Testament to the weather and the course playing superbly well. This will stand you all in good stead as we approach the season as you will all be pretty well golfed when we reach the season's start.

This is also a great time to evaluate your golf season ahead and make decisions on how you may improve your golf this year, or indeed get the most out of your golf. The weekly newsletter is full of great articles and advice on how you can achieve your season's goals. Keep reading to see the benefits it can bring.

This weekend sees the much anticipated launch of the new Nike Vapor range. As used by the current world number one Rory McIlroy, as well as arguably the best player of all time Tiger Woods, Nike Golf have produced a simply stunning range for the season ahead. With a great range of fully custom fit irons to suit all standards and a superb range of woods there really is something for everybody. Have a look at the range for yourself on my website - simply click here. We will be having the full range in to stock as well as a fully loaded custom fitting cart. So along with our expert knowledge we have everything we need to give you the full Vapor fitting experience. Please contact the pro shop to book your fitting or click here.

More exciting products will be hitting the shelves very soon. We have the brilliant club ranges from Cobra and Mizuno due in at any time as well as shoes from Nike, adidas and Puma. Clothing brands such as Puma, Nike and Under Armour will also be in store. This is the most exciting year yet for new product and we have some superb stock to cater for all golfers. Don't forget your pro shop is the best place to give you the first class service and value for money.

Due to a re-structure in my business accounting system there will be a new structure to your members accounts in the pro shop. From the 1st of February 2015 you will receive any pro shop credit you may have left in the form of a voucher which will be valid for 6 months. As the voucher is issued, your pro shop account balance will be set back to zero.

From February 2nd 2015 any money put in to your pro shop account will stay there and can be used as normal until 31st December 2015, when again any pro shop credit you have left will be issued to you as a voucher which will be valid for 6 months and again your pro shop account will be set back to zero. This will then be the process going forward. I hope this makes sense to you all and if you have any queries then please feel free to contact me in the pro shop.

If I asked every golfer we see if they honestly know how far they hit their clubs I think the percentage that say yes and mean it would be very low. Knowing how far you hit each club really is a massive key in saving shots and shooting lower scores. I appreciate that you will not hit every shot the same but to have at least an idea of the average distance the ball travels with your clubs will make a big difference. How that distance is made up is also of big importance. A proportion of any your shots will be spent in the air and the rest running along the ground. Understanding what percentage that is a vital part of knowing your yardage.

For example
Fred and Bill both hit their own 7-irons a total distance of 140 yards. However, when you look at the detail a bit closer it makes interesting reading. Fred carries his 7-iron through the air 132 yards and then it runs 8 yards giving him his 140 total. Bill however only carries his 7-iron 125 yards but it runs 15 yards to get to his 140 total. So you have two golfers achieving the same total distance but getting there in different ways.

Knowing your carry distance is vital when making the correct club selections particularly when carrying obstacles such as water. Judging your carry distances is impossible unless you undertake a gap test. A gap test allows us to show you your average carry and total distances with all your clubs. We the provide you with a special gap testing tag which clips on to your golf bag and has your yardages written on it (See below). This gives you great reference when out on the course.

To book your gap testing please contact the pro shop or get in touch here.

Most golfers have a yardage or shot that they feel most comfortable with. If this is the case and there is one shot you feel you could repeat more times than any other, do you put yourself in a position to do this as many times as possible during a round?

This very important concept of course management can help to reduce stress, increase confidence and of course lower scores.

For example:
If your favourite club is an 8-iron, you should aim to plot your way around the golf course leaving as many 8-irons as possible. Now you will be thinking, on some holes that would mean hitting strange clubs off the tee - it is of course not possible on every hole but have a think about this concept and I guarantee the better you get at it the more consistent your score become.

To talk to me about this concept or to book an on-course lesson, pop in at anytime.

Dates for your diary

  • Saturday, 31 January -10.00am-11.00am - Junior Coaching
  • Sunday, 1 February - 11.00am-12.00pm - Junior First Team Coaching

Daily Mail Qualifier - Congratulations to Phil Bradford and Pete Layland for winning the Daily Mail Foursomes qualifier at the club last weekend. Their superb score of 42 points earnt them a three shot win over Dougie Porter and Kev Hewings. The pair will now represent the club in the knockout stages of this National competition. I will keep you updated on their progress.

Teignagers Stableford - An excellent field took to the course to compete in the monthly stableford. On a fairly cold day it was hard to predict what a good score would be. Keith Burgess showed that a good score was possible as his 40 ponits took top spot in Division One ahead of Geoff Garrett on 39 points. Richard Godfrey's 36 points was enough to top Division Two with Colin Dyson the runner-up on 32 points.
