Greetings from Darren Everett
Teign Valley Golf Club - PGA Golf Professional

Hello golfers,

I trust this finds you well. Hopefully you have all had the opportunity to take to the course and play some golf this week. We have been carrying out some scheduled maintenance to the greens over the past few weeks which has now been completed. We would like to thank you all for your understanding through this process and hope you will see what benefit this will give the playability of the greens for the season ahead. I actually was out on the course with the green staff today and it was amazing to see how quickly the greens have recovered and how fantastic they looked. They will only play better as we go through the next couple of weeks!

Spring Equinox - A very good field took to the course to compete in the Spring Equinox. The winning score of nett 67 was returned by Graham Arnold who in the process won his first major golf competition, well done Graham..

Ladies Medal - The ladies have contested their monthly Medal this past week. On Saturday Sue Longstreeth was star performer as she signed for a nett 68. On Tuesday Vivienne Masterson won Division One with a nett 73. Division Two was won by Ann Sommerscales with a nett 74. A nett 70 from Margaret Kingdon took Division Three honours.

Teignagers' Medal - The Teignagers played their monthly Medal on Wednesday. Ian Couper won Division One with 39 points helped by two twos. Courtney Wright signed for 39 points to win Division Two.

The subject of golf balls is always an interesting topic. A typical conversation with a customer about golf balls is usually based around them needing some balls, with myself and my staff asking what type of ball they play with. The answer 9 times out of 10 is "what ever I can find"! Most golfers fail to realise the importance of playing with the same type of ball. At any level of golf, playing with the correct type of ball that suits your game will undoubtedly save you shots.

So which is the best ball?

Well there seems to be a misconception that as Pro V1 balls from Titleist are the most expensive they must be the best ball to play. Now there is no doubting that the Pro V1 ball is a brilliant ball, but only for a certain type of player, let me explain why. Every ball has a compression, so basically although golf balls seem rock hard they will compress flat by up to a third at impact. Therefore playing with the correct compression is very important.

Let's take a ladies ball. These are usually around 40-50 compression. Let's put that on the tee and ask Rory McIlroy to hit it with his driver, it would have the same effect as hitting a sponge! The ball will compress too much and will leave the clubface with lost speed. At the other end of the scale, you have a Pro V1 which is around 90 compression. This time we tee it up and ask a very slow swinging lady to hit the ball with her driver. This now has the effect of hitting a stone as the ball is to hard and cannot be compressed and so therefore leading to loss of distance.

So how do you know what ball best suits your game?

The answer is to book yourself a ball fitting. In a ball fitting we can easily analyse what type of ball is best suited to you based around the way you strike the golf ball and also what you want out of a ball for your short game. Sometimes there needs to be a compromise in the shape of would you prefer more distance or more control over short game? Particularly for short game, playing with the same type of ball really helps your feel for short shots and putting.

Why not come in and talk to us about a ball fitting? If you can't get down to the club, get in touch here

Spikeless for summer - With the weather seemingly on the turn and the course dry and firm, now is the perfect time to sort out your summer golf shoes. A very popular concept is the dimpled spikeless golf shoes that allow you to drive up to the club, play your golf, have drink after your round and then drive home without changing your shoes. We have a brilliant selection of styles in stock from FootJoy, Nike and adidas. Pop in and have a look.

Help!! - If anyone has any spare balls that would good for practice and are willing to donate them I would love to take them off your hands. We are just about to undertake some local schools coaching with a view to increasing our junior section at the club. When they come to the club for weekend coaching we are getting short on practice balls so if anyone can help please contact the pro shop.

Here in the Pro Shop we are your complete golfing solution. Our team with Myself, James and Chris are experts in the fields that matter most to all golfers, the standard of their golf game and the equipment they use. So what services can we offer and who can deliver those services?

Custom Fitting
- All three of us are trained to be able to custom fit any golfer. We can help establish the correct type of equipment that would best suit your game and fit you with the correct shaft, grip, lie angle and much more. All this is done at no cost if you purchase the equipment you are fitted for from us. We can book fittings any time of the week to suit the individual. To book a fitting come and talk to either Myself, James or Chris.

Gap Testings and Ball Fittings - All three of us are trained to be able to give a customer either a complete gap testing which will allow us to show you how far you hit each of the clubs in your bag on average including carry distances and total distances. We can then print out a complete list for you to take away as a reminder. Either of the three of us are again trained to fit you for the correct golf ball that best suits your game. This can be based around a certain feel you like from a ball or how much spin you create which can affect distance. Once we have fitted you with the correct ball you will given a sleeve of the chosen ball to take away and play with. To book a fitting come and talk to either Myself, James or Chris.

Coaching - Both James and I are both PGA Qualified golf coaches. James is here as a full-time coach/custom fitter. I am also available for coaching if any one specifically requires me and of course am around full time for custom fittings. Lesson packages can be tailored to suit a player's game or if is just a quick brush up session or quick fix then this can also be catered for. To book a fitting come and talk to myself or James.

So as you can see we really are your complete golfing solution and are here to help and advise you on your way to better golf.

The Tour Traxion TR golf shoes from adidas will appeal to a great many golfers thanks to its sporty look which doesn't cross into the 'garish' category like some modern designs.
