Greetings from Darren Everett
Teign Valley Golf Club - PGA Golf Professional

Hello golfers,

I trust this finds you well and you have enjoyed some golf this week. It's been another busy week here at the Club with all the sections holding their respective Club Championship. We now enter another busy period as we have the annual staging of our Pro-Am and PGA Fourball event next week. We have lots planned in the diary for the foreseeable future including a wedge clinic and a putting clinic so please keeping reading both this newsletter and upcoming communications to find out more details.

Come and improve your short game with PING

I have been lucky enough to be given a bag full of PING demo wedges and putters for the next month. We will be using them for our upcoming short game clinics but if anyone wishes to come up in their own time to try them out, they are more than welcome. We have a selection of different head styles and lengths in the putters and many different lofts and bounces in the wedges. Come in and let us advise you of what may suit your game best so that you can enjoy better golf in 2015.

Wedge Clinic

James and I are holding a wedge clinic on Tuesday, 23 June. The time is 6.30pm - 8.00pm and the cost is £10 per person to include a sleeve of FREE balls. The clinic is limited to just 12 people so be quick to put your name down to reserve a place as spaces are going fast. The clinic will cover the following:

  • Which type of wedge?
  • What is bounce and how to use it?
  • Good wedge technique
  • Drills and exercises for good wedge practice

This is a fantastic opportunity to improve your wedge play and start saving shots! Book your space here.

Club Championship weekend

Last weekend saw both the ladies and men's Club Championships take place. We had a record entry for the men's event and a good sized field for the ladies event. The Championships were played over 36-holes with 18-holes on each day. The conditions over both days were tricky with a stiff breeze making club selection a key factor.

Men's Championship

After round one it was very tight in the scratch event as a superb gross 74 from Shaun Douglas gave him a two shot lead over three other players. His nett 65 was also second in the handicap event until the leading nett 62 unfortunately had to be disqualified meaning that Shaun now led in both events. Sunday's second round promised to be enthralling and so it proved. Whilst all eyes were on the leading groups from day one it was Geoff Garrett who stormed through the field with an excellent gross 74 (nett 65) to eventually win both trophies! Pipped in to the runner-up spot in both events was club captain Ted Ridgewell who had performed superbly over the two days.

Ladies Championship

The ladies Championship looked equally as tight on paper although in the end it was the handicap event that proved the closet. Annette Haigh led the scratch after round one with a solid gross 84 to lead going in to day two. The sister pair of Carol Davies and Fiona Carpenter led the handicap event after round one with nett 69s. Day two saw Annette return a second successive gross 84 to capture the scratch trophy. The nett was looking like a close affair and in the end it was Vivienne Masterson who captured the trophy with a combined score of nett 143 to win her first major trophy in 11 years of trying.

Teignagers' Club Championship

The teignagers held their Club Championship on Wednesday with a big field competing for the scratch and nett championship trophies. With conditions challenging yet again it would be interesting to see who prevailed. Ted Ridgewell took the scratch trophy as his gross 79 was solid in the conditions. John Davies shot the low nett score of the day as his nett 66 beat Tony Landau by two shots.

Congratulations and well done to all those who competed over the weekend and contributed towards a superb couple of days of golf. Equally, well done to all those who competed on Wednesday in the teignagers' event.

Hot from winning the prestigious Club Championship this week, here is a testimonial from the 2015 Men's Club Champion Geoff Garrett:

I would like to thank James for his patience and enthusiasm in helping me hit the ball better . I would encourage anybody who is serious about reducing their handicap to see a golf professional. Having lessons with James in the early part of the year has helped me to reduce my handicap from 10.3 to 8.3 in just three months. What a fantastic weekend weather wise, the course looked and played brilliantly, well done to Chris and Lucy for doing such a good job. I also thought that changing the pin positions for Sunday was also a good touch. Well done, Darren. Thanks again to all.

Use your feet for success

Hopefully something you are already doing, but if not, this thought can dramatically help your game. Often overlooked the only part of you that has contact to the floor are your feet - so balance, power and stability can be influenced from here. When you next address the ball make sure you are gripping the ground with your feet, this should help stability but more importantly provide a consistent and repeatable base to start from. Poor balance can lead to inconsistent shots and a trouble playing uneven lies!! Give it a go and don't hesitate to let me know your thoughts. Justin Rose's swing coach Sean Foley makes all his golfers practice at some point with their shoes off for increasing kinesthetic/proprioceptive feel. I have heard Justin Rose is good, too!!

June offer - 45 minute lesson with review £20.00
Upcoming events - Sat 13 Jun - 9.00am - 12.00pm - Junior Academy depending on group for time - make sure you ring to confirm you are coming if you haven't been for a few weeks - the sessions are in high demand and filling up quicker than ever.

I am delighted to announce that we are now an official Grass Roots Golf Centre. Authorised by The Golf Foundation we have been granted this title with a view to the exciting up and coming contributions we will be making to help grow the game and introduce new people to golf. Our aims include the following:

  • Build the structure of a new junior golf academy
  • Run adult beginner golf lessons
  • Run specific ladies beginner golf lessons

As an official Grass Roots Centre we have access to funding to allow us to successfully implement our objectives. I will keep you updated with our progress in future newsletters.

Ted and myself are looking for challengers to take us on in a series of challenge matches. The format will be pairs better ball stableford. The cost is £10 per pair but if any pairs beat us they will receive a sleeve of three balls. At the end of the series of matches the pair with the best stableford points will play alongside myself and Ted in a regional Pro-Am at no cost to the players. There is a list of dates in the changing rooms but if you would like to contact us with a date and time of your own then we will try our very best to squeeze it in to our diaries. Pairs can be made up of any combination and the matches will be played from the red and white tees. We look forward to playing with you.
