Greetings from Darren Everett
Teign Valley Golf Club - PGA Golf Professional

Hello Golfers,

I hope this finds you well and your golf is in good shape. If it's not then don't forget we are here to help. Whether it be through a golf lesson or through a fitting for correct equipment, we can offer you the best advice to best help you turn your game around. We have had a very busy week at the club with some superb days held so keep reading the newsletter for reports.

Pros day

A field of 192 took to the course on Pro's Day last weekend to take part in a betterball pairs competition. With the course in superb condition and the weather set fair, it was going to be a great day of golf with some superb scoring. Some of the pins were tucked away in order to keep the scoring sensible and by and large that was the case.

The winning score always looked like it could end up around the mid to high 40s until the winning score of 51 points by Mike Peters and Steve Willoughby was posted. Runners-up were Carol and Nathan Davies with 48 points. There were 18 nearest the pins with a varying list of winners and a closest to the post on the 8th hole prize won by Chris Coombes. The betting hole on the 10th seemed to go down a storm with players having the chance to double their money by hitting the green (pictured below). There were a few smiling as they walked back in the shop and a fair few grimacing! We even had Simon, the owner, out playing with his son George and he is dining out on the fact he made a two on the 7th! The draw for the 2s sweep was for a fourball voucher at Woodbury Park and this was won by Frank Dobson and Bjorn Lonngren.

I must say a huge thank you to Simon, Chris and Lucie, Nicola, Angie and Jenny for all their help and hard work on the day. The biggest thanks though must go to my immediate team of Chris, James and my wife Leah for helping to drive and organise the day and making it the success it was (the dream team is pictured below). Of course the day doesn't happen without golfers so a massive thanks to all of you came and supported the day, it was very much appreciated.

Pros news

The Men's Captain and I played at Bowood on Monday in the Regional Qualifier for the Captain and Pro Challenge. The course was superb and we had it at three-under-par through nine holes but unfortunately fell away through the back nine and finished on level par 72. Nevertheless we had a great day out and I thank Ted for his company (pictured above).

Charity day

On Tuesday we held our Ladies Charity Day. Around 50 players took part on a lovely day of weather. There were auctions and raffles held through the day to raise extra funds and the feedback we had on the course and the club as a whole from the visitors playing was very positive.

Over 120 seniors came to the club on Wednesday to support the Teignagers' Charity Day. With the weather forecast poor for later in the day the hope was that the majority of the field could get round before the heavens opened. This was actually the case and only the last hour of play had to endure the heavy rain. A successful auction took place as well as a raffle for the use of a brand new Mercedes for a weekend. Well done to Derek Hathaway and his team for a superbly organised day. On first reports it looks like over £2000 was raised.

Coaching news

Clubface aim

I always hear people say 'I hit that wrong because my feet were wrong' - now this may be the case and potentially may cause an issue with movement pattern, path, or angle of attack however the aim cause of a ball starting the wrong way is clubface aim. A scary fact is that where the clubface points at impact is up to 65% the main contributing factor (up to 90% with driver) of where the golf ball starts. Instead of questioning smaller factors this must be the main thought address by every golfer.

For instance - If the club is aiming to the right and the ball finishes straight that is a manipulation of the face through impact - if you do not know you are doing this, or cannot repeat it, then you will hit random shots at will. Getting this checked to see what repeatable movement can do for your game is a must.

Can you afford to not achieve what you want or see your playing partners pass you by?
