Hello golfers,
I hope this finds you all well and you have had a successful week on the course. And so we arrive at the year's last major - the US PGA Championship. It has the makings of being the best major yet as so many players are in-form and of course we have the return from injury of the world number one Rory McIlroy, who will be very keen to make up for being out of action for the past six weeks. Rory will be wanting to add to his major tally and maintain his number one spot with Jordan Spieth breathing down his neck. Spieth himself will be keen to add major number three for the season and add his name to a very short but distinguished list of players to achieve this feat. You also have form players like Bubba Watson, Jason Day and Justin Rose who with big hitting a premium this week, should all be in contention. As always I will be having a dabble with some little bets and here are my tips for this week:
Rory McIlroy - Because it's Rory
Jason Day - Surely a Major is not far away?
Jim Furyk - If there is one guy who can defy a long hitters course
Marc Leishman - Has contended majors before, good each-way bet
Gary Woodland - Hits it miles and surely has to start contending in majors
Good luck!
2 Man Team Championship - Last weekend saw the staging of the annual Men's 2 Man Team Championship. In a testing format, both players had to keep a medal score and both scores were combined to create a team score in both nett and gross. Winners of the nett trophy were the pair of Steve Locke and Vince Chalk who recorded a combined total of 139 (pictured below with their trophy). The scratch trophy was shared as the pairs of Stuart Daw and Simon Madge and Joel Carnell and Paul Madge both recorded 157 totals.
Mixed Team Championship - The Mixed Team Championship took place on Sunday with teams playing for one of the best looking trophies in the cabinet. With teams consisting of two men and one lady the format was two scores to count stableford. The winning team recorded 86 points and consisted of Alison Orchard, Malcom Orchard and Steve Collins. Their score could have been even better as they reached the turn in 51 points! Well done to them though - pictured below.
Ladies Medal and Olympic Cup - The ladies played their Monthly Medal and also the Olympic Cup on Tuesday. Maggie Thomson won both her division and the Olympic Cup with an excellent nett 71. Division 2 was won by Liz Evans with a nett 74 and Pauline Robinson won Division 3 with a nett 72.
Wedge fittings save shots
We have seen a huge surge in wedge fittings over the last few months. With the potential to save so many shots with wedges, we have been trying to educate our customers on how crucial it is to carry the correct set up of wedges in the bag particularly when it comes to bounce and loft options. Covering your yardages with the correct wedge set up is of upmost importance but so is having the correct type of bounce and grind. This is based around your angle of attack in to the ball and what sort of divot, if any, you take - i.e. big divot or shallow divot. These are all things we access when we go through a wedge fitting process and all things that are guaranteed to improve your wedge play. To book your wedge fitting now please contact the pro shop or get in touch here.
I had my initial assessment with one of my game improvement champions this week. John Simon and myself took to the course to play a few holes to allow me to view his game in order to plan a schedule for us to work on in order to improve his game. There were some great signs in John's game of where he can really improve and take his game to the next level.
We have identified some areas within his swing and grip that we feel will make a big difference and also some areas within the short game where we can save some shots. We have our first proper lesson booked in for next week and we are looking forward to working on John's game to see where we can take it. I will keep you updated on our progress after the lesson.
