Hello golfers,
I trust this finds you well and your golf has been in good shape this week. It's been a case of picking and choosing your playing times this week in amongst the varying weather conditions. Unfortunately we had to cancel the Captain v Vice-Captain Challenge match at the weekend due to the weather but thankfully the weather improved on Sunday to allow the Junior Club Championships to take place.
Sunday saw the Junior Club Championships take place with trophies for both CONGU and non-CONGU handicaps. It was brilliant to see a great turnout of juniors in pretty dismal conditions, all returning from the course with smiles on their faces which was great to see. Each player was presented with a Teign Valley pitch fork and ball marker for taking part in the event. In the non-CONGU handicap trophy it was the up and coming Toby Elworthy who took top spot as his brilliant 9-hole score of 24 points was good enough for victory. In the CONGU handicap event it was Harry Pierce who was the main man as he picked up both the handicap and scratch trophies in his last year as a junior. A big thank you must go to junior organiser Pete for organising the event and also to Ted for presenting the prizes.
Vivienne Masterson was star performer in the Ladies Stableford as her 36 points won Division One, ahead of Kim Paleyin second. Division Two was won by Liz Evans who pipped Jane MacDonald Smith. Pauline Robinson took Division Three's honours.

I have been astounded at how many golfers have improved their results on the back of purchasing a GPS device or rangefinder. Knowing exactly how far you have left to the green will undoubtedly help you to choose the correct club to play the shot with. It also helps you to start working out how far your clubs actually go if you are unsure. If you have yet to purchase one then please take the time to come in to the shop and let us talk you through what's available and what might best suit your game. We have a great range of watches in stock from Garmin and SkyCaddie and range finders from Bushnell and Nikon. We also have demo watches for you to take on to the course and try before purchasing. They will make a perfect Christmas gift, too.
As we enter in to the winter golf season it is a great time to start looking at the condition of your grips. It is inevitable that over a period of time your grips will start to wear and you will lose traction on them. As this happens, the most common compensation is to grip the club tighter, however this has a negative influence on your shots as a tight grip will lead to tension and in-turn cause a lack of rhythm and poor positioning throughout your golf swing = poor golf shots. Re-gripping your clubs prior to winter weather will certainly help you grip your clubs more effectively. We have a wide range of grips in stock and offer free fitting with any grips purchased.
Winter tips - The importance of gap testing
This is a crucial part of all golfers games that is easy, fun and cost effective to do. It is also an element that is often overlooked.
Provides confidence as you will be aware how far each club carries and rolls
Shows where possible gaps will be to help highlight what clubs/more importantly what yardage needs to be achieved when looking for club additions
Shows patterns in miss-strikes or too much curvature that can be discussed with a PGA Pro
Highlights any possible problems with set lofts as the PGA Pro will be able to advise on good club differences and how his can affect desired yardage.
These are just a few of many benefits. This really is a service every member should do!! It can help get the most out of your game, make playing other golf courses easier and is a must if using any form of distance measuring device. What would be the point of knowing exactly how far to the hole but guessing how far you hit each club.
